A few changes around here…

Hello anyone/everyone who reads this blog:

Tim’s Bookmarks

Copper Art Designs would like to say, Congratulations Tim Pruitt!

Our good friend Tim has just recently been accepted into the doctorate program at Buffalo University in upstate New York. He will be continuing his studies in Cognitive Psychology and expanding his already long list of places he has called home. Shortly after being accepted into the program he came to us to have some special gifts made for professors and other key people who helped make his dream possible.

And what else do you get members of the academic arena…bookmarks of course!

Timmy we wish you the best with your research, classwork and keeping your sanity in check. We are sad to have you leave us but ecstatic to know you are pushing your pursuit of knowledge as much as you possibly can. Make us proud friend.

We Made the Etsy Spotlight Blog: A Well Deserved Treat

365 Days - This piece is a part of our Cycles in Nature series capturing how the seasons change our environment throughout the year.

Recently, our sculpture “365 Days” was included in the Etsy Spotlight Blog. Pretty sweet considering the number of visitors the Etsy blog normally receives. You can see the blog post here: http://www.etsy.com/storque/spotlight/etsy-finds-a-well-deserved-treat-8193/

marymary was the author of the post and described the collection with the following paragraph.

I’m the type of gal who saves up for a single statement piece at a time. I’ll ruminate over it for weeks or months on end while squirreling away funds for the worthy indulgence. I can’t wait to share the lust-worthy finds I’ve been contemplating for a summer splurge. This Etsy Finds collection will make you feel like the queen in your midsummer night’s dream.

We’re hoping to get mentioned on the blog again though it seems to be in rare occurrence. We’ll keep trying though. New works on the way as we prepare for the Board Walk Art Show.

shiny copper mushrooms

A pretty cool find on flickr by Angela Hoffmann aka Gemini Angel Art. These mushrooms have an odd but interesting copper look to them. Not sure of the species.

Thanks Angela for letting me post the photo.

We are busy in the studio preparing for the Boardwalk Art and other upcoming art shows. Quite a few custom orders are trickling in as well so this is the beginning of a very busy, but welcomed, summer.

See ya around,
John

Down at the Boardwalk

365 Days - This piece is a part of our Cycles in Nature series capturing how the seasons change our environment throughout the year. The crisp air of winter has begun to pack its bags. Beach weather is finally on its way and this year there is an added bonus for Copper Art Designs. We have been offered a chance to expand once more and take part in the 2010 Boardwalk Art Show, which we have happily accepted. As anyone familiar with this area knows we are neither a big art town nor do we usually have art related events that draw large crowds but the Boardwalk Art Show is our big dance and we will finally be a part of it!

We have taken this opportunity to expand our artwork by creating pieces that are not only bigger but that allow us to show off even more of coppers brilliance. New ideas, images and videos will be posted periodically to allow our dearest friends and fans to follow along as we prepare for our days of art on the beach.

If you are going to be in the area please come check us out along with 300 artists from near and far who will be sure to impress as well. Get some new art and make some new friends all while you work on your tan at the ocean front. We hope to see you there!

Vancouver Olympic medals are one of a kind

Olympic medals as unique as athletes

– Have you looked closely at the medals being awarded to the Olympic athletes? If you think they look different, you’re right.

Unlike most medals in other Olympics, they are not flat, but have a wavy design that from some angles makes them look not perfectly round. This design represents the mountains of western Canada around Vancouver. The design on each medal is unique, part of a larger work of art created by a native Canadian artist. Winners get a scarf showing the entire work, so they can find where their medal — or medals — appears. The medals weigh between 17 and 20 ounces — a little more than a pound — and are just under four inches across. The gold medal is mostly silver but is covered in gold. The silver medal is all silver. And the bronze medal? It’s made of copper.

Another Attempt at the Boardwalk Art Show

Doug and I recently submitted our third Boardwalk Art Show application. Below you will find the images we submitted for our application. The funny thing about this application (and many others like it) is the fact that the artist gets only 300 characters, yes characters not words, to describe the materials and techniques used in creating the art. Regardless of the limitations to explain one’s work, we thought our description was concise and accurate not only with materials and technique but also in describing the intent of our work:

Copper sheet metal is cut into various shapes, colored with patina via oxidation, and displayed in hand crafted wood frames. This work explores how humans visually and conceptually reconcile the dichotomy of discrete and continuous data as it relates to nature and time.

I’ll try and post some explanations of the pieces soon. See ya’ll soon.
