Red, White, and Blue = Silver

Red, White, and Blue Burger by Douglas Denzine

A few weekends ago our own Douglas Denzine participated in an All American Cook Off at a locally owned restaurant (Atlas Diner). Doug is known to have some delicious recipes in his repertoire (Tangerine Chicken Caesar wraps, American style sushi, The Dank Chili, etc) so I was certainly not surprised, but still impressed, to hear the name of his burger for the competition: The Red, White, and Blue Burger. Working cleverly and seamlessly into the competition’s theme, The Red, White, and Blue Burger was comprised of “true” American toppings which also symbolically reflected the US of A. Each topping represented a color of the U.S. flag and was also regionally associated with North America: sliced red bell peppers (native to the Americas), white Vermont cheddar, and blueberries (native to North America).

As for taste? The bell pepper slices were deep fried giving them a nice crispy texture – a nice compliment to their own distinct flavor. The blueberry’s subtle sweetness and tartness balanced out the salty complex flavors of the cheddar, peppers, and beef. In every bite, the berries were mini-explosions of a summer cookout.

This creative recipe led Doug to win 2nd place overall in the competition. He unofficially won local’s favorite at our table as well. Congrats D.

Nothern Lights

The great lights of the Aurora Borealis, better known as the Northern Lights, can be seen as you make your way to the northern United States on up through Canada. If you live in the south the drive to see this spectacle may be a bit out of reach for a weekend road trip. But thanks to a very interesting birthday present request, that we recently received, you can now find these energetic nocturnal rivers of light in our art work.

This piece allowed us to not only look through pages of stunning photos of the light show on display in the northern sky for research; it also gave us a chance to explore new and stylized techniques with our copper. Capturing the glow of light was a bit tricky but after some experimentation we found a result that gave us a soft feathered glow evoking the idea of the northern lights.

We hope that when the piece makes its way to where it will rest in North Carolina that it will be a reminder of the evening illumination that has kept anyone who has caught a glimpse in awe.

Whelk

Whelk, you asked for it. A shell of epic proportions that will be part of our salute to nature series which we hope to debut at the Boardwalk Art Show in Virginia Beach this summer.

Whelk 24″ x 36″

A marvel of nature’s design this large shell etched in wonderful detail gives a look at the patterns that rest along the salty blue ocean floor.

The Boardwalk Art Show will be taking place June 18th-21st. You should make some time to check it out if you are in the area. If we are fortunate enough we will be there to greet you and give you a first hand look at all the wonderful art you have been seeing on our blog and website. Stay Tuned for more new art from the studio.

Blue Crab

Another sneak peek at art work from inside the studio. This large crustacean is part of a series that looks at the animals of the Chesapeake Bay. Since the bay is a big part of our local geography and economy we wanted to recognize the creatures that make up this massive ecosystem.

A tribute to the Chesapeake Bay blue crab, this original drawing has been etched into copper with added blue patina to accentuate natural colors and tones.

We received word that the Boardwalk Art Show has extended it’s application deadline by a few days so the jury process will probably be pushed back a few days as well. Keep checking in to see more of the art work focused and inspired by nature and to hear if we have been selected into the show.
