Doug and I recently submitted our third Boardwalk Art Show application. Below you will find the images we submitted for our application. The funny thing about this application (and many others like it) is the fact that the artist gets only 300 characters, yes characters not words, to describe the materials and techniques used in creating the art. Regardless of the limitations to explain one’s work, we thought our description was concise and accurate not only with materials and technique but also in describing the intent of our work:

Copper sheet metal is cut into various shapes, colored with patina via oxidation, and displayed in hand crafted wood frames. This work explores how humans visually and conceptually reconcile the dichotomy of discrete and continuous data as it relates to nature and time.

I’ll try and post some explanations of the pieces soon. See ya’ll soon.

My cell phone buzzed in my pocket around 11:30, and I hesitated to answer as I looked at the unfamiliar number. After another buzz or two I opened the phone and said hello. It was not a phone call to be missed.

Lesley, a woman who stopped by our tent at the Town Center Art & Wine Festival, was on the other end. I remembered her from the festival; she was interested in one of our larger pieces, but unsure whether or not it was too big to fill an open wall in her entryway. She looked over the piece a few times, took some notes on the measurements, grabbed one of my business cards, and told us she would be in touch. Any artist that has worked a show or two has probably had this exact experience a dozen or more times—and this one time—you really hope they call, you hope they send an email. More often than not, they ride off into the sunset, never to be heard from again. This time, she called.

Lucky for us, the piece was a perfect fit. Lesley had her eye on one of our first large etchings, a piece we dubbed, The Palms. The Palms is 36″ X 48″ and has a beautiful antique patina. She is placing it in an entryway above a carved wooden chest, and I imagine the two compliment each other quite well. This was an early Copper Art Designs creation, and we were all attached to it after seeing it in the gallery day-in and day-out. The best fate of any piece or artwork is to find a place where it will be displayed and admired, and so we were happy to sell one of our larger works, knowing that it was headed to a new, loving home. Thank you Lesley for supporting the arts and local artists.

The great lights of the Aurora Borealis, better known as the Northern Lights, can be seen as you make your way to the northern United States on up through Canada. If you live in the south the drive to see this spectacle may be a bit out of reach for a weekend road trip. But thanks to a very interesting birthday present request, that we recently received, you can now find these energetic nocturnal rivers of light in our art work.

This piece allowed us to not only look through pages of stunning photos of the light show on display in the northern sky for research; it also gave us a chance to explore new and stylized techniques with our copper. Capturing the glow of light was a bit tricky but after some experimentation we found a result that gave us a soft feathered glow evoking the idea of the northern lights.

We hope that when the piece makes its way to where it will rest in North Carolina that it will be a reminder of the evening illumination that has kept anyone who has caught a glimpse in awe.

Each element is aged with patina giving the squares their distinct character. The elements are placed on poplar risers and the entire piece is also backed with stained poplar giving it a clean finish. All pieces are handcrafted and assembled which results in slight variants in texture, tone, and color concentration.

Portability with character. The compact design of the pocket journal allows for it to fit in your pocket or purse with out taking up much room. The accordion page folds allow you the option of starting from the front or back and also have pages that shift from portrait to landscape depending on how it is opened. The pages are aged and texture to compliment the front cover. (Includes 30 pages)

These small books can be used as a sketch pad, diary, journal, daily planner or for note taking. The book, with an aged and patinaed copper front cover, is fitted with a leather strap for secure closing. Eucaboard backing adds support which is approximately 1/4 inch thick.

Size: 2.25″ x 3″
